Dekassegui Brazil: Memory, Work, and achievements
Dekassegui Brazil is a photographic project that explores the history, memories, and achievements of the Brazilian community in Japan. Inspired by personal experiences and the collective journey of thousands of Brazilian immigrants, the project recreates moments that defined the lives of the first generation of dekassegui workers who arrived in Japan during the 1990s. Through photography, it documents factory work, cultural adaptation, family separation, resilience, and the everyday realities of building a new life between two countries. The project later expanded to include a second series that highlights the evolution of the Brazilian community in Japan. While the first chapter focuses on the challenges of immigration, the second celebrates social integration, entrepreneurship, family life, education, and the contributions Brazilians have made to Japanese society over the past decades. Together, these photographic series create a visual narrative of a community's transformation—from uncertainty and sacrifice to achievement, belonging, and cultural exchange. The work has been exhibited and featured by institutions and organizations including JICA, the Brazilian Community of Kansai (CBK), NHK, TV Cultura, Create Hamamatsu, the Iwata International Festival, and TEDx Hamamatsu. It has also received media coverage from major Japanese and Brazilian publications. More than a documentary project, Dekassegui Brazil is a visual tribute to memory, identity, resilience, and the enduring connections between Brazil and Japan.
